That’s what I thought at first, but you pass the line UNDER the diagonal, so now it makes sense.

The three knots required are:
bowline
round turn and two half hitches
reef knot. The way to tie up onto a cleat is a different matter

Is it just me, or is step #4 from the cleat hitch diagram missing a pass of the line? The diagram goes through the proper steps, but the step #4 image does not appear to me to show the results of the steps (especially what the greyish line part of the step #3 image).
